British and Irish Lions Tour – Stick says it will be like revenge

Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick says facing the British & Irish Lions was one of the best experiences of his career. He cannot wait for next year’s tour to begin.  Rugby lovers can book their Springboks Vs British And Irish Lions Tickets on discounted prices easily

The last time the Lions toured South Africa in 2009. Stick who at the time was captaining the Blitzboks to a World Sevens Series title. He had the privilege of facing the tourists in their match against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth. The King’s side was coached by current Worcester Warriors director of rugby Alan Solomons.

King’s side was a largely invitational team. A bulk of players from overseas clubs, the Vodacom Bulls, and a few from the Eastern Cape. Stick’s Blitzbok teammate, Mpho Mbiyozo, would score the Kings’ only try as the Lions went on to claim a hard-fought 20-8 victory.

Stick came on to the field in the second half but says the memories of that match are still fresh in his mind.It was 11 years ago, but I remember everything from that game,’ Stick said. ‘Many players don’t get the opportunity [of playing against the Lions], but for me, even after retiring, it always brought a smile to my face.

‘We were facing the best players from Europe. Ronan O’Gara kicked 10 points, Ugo Monye scored their only try, and there were many other big names, too. To share the field with all those players created memories that will last a lifetime, and I’m grateful for that opportunity.

‘Around then, I was all the while playing for the Blitzboks, however, I got a call from Mr. Solomons and he requested that I play that game. Myself and Mpho Mbiyozo, who was with me at the Springbok Sevens group, just couldn’t disapprove of this chance.

‘There was one thing that made it very special to me – to play in front of our supporters in Port Elizabeth. It’s the place that made me who I am, and it’s very close to my heart.

‘We had any semblance of De Wet Barry, an extraordinary Springbok, Solly Tyibilika and Francois Hougaard – a ton of incredible players, and for me, as a youth, it was uncommon to hobnob with these folks. At that point, taking a gander at the setting.

It would have been the principal sports coordinate at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, that was worked for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. We were truly eager to be a piece of that history.’

Springbok assistant coach:

Now working under Jacques Nienaber as the Springboks’ assistant coach, Stick says the Lions will have vengeance on their minds after the Springboks’ victories over Wales and England during last year’s World Cup win.

‘The World Cup final against England was very tough and we had to be at our very best – I think facing the Lions will be three times as tough. Unlike at a World Cup, where you do have easier

weeks, there will be no opportunities to take things easy when preparing for the Lions – every training session, every gym session will have to count.

‘We are the current RWC champions – we beat England in the final and Wales in the semi-final, so they are going to come hard for us. It will be like revenge.

We’re certainly not expecting anything light. The northern-hemisphere sides are very strong at the moment – all of those teams are very tough, and we’ll make sure that we’re ready for that challenge.

Edwards already has the experience of being with the Lions as a defensive coach when they last traveled to South Africa in 2009 with head coach Sir Ian McGeechan, but when Gatland took over, he opted for Andy Farrell as a defensive coach on the road. 2013 and 2017 by Australia and New Zealand respectively.

He has also worked with Gatland for Wales, where he was a defensive coach since 2008 and decided to part ways after the 2019 World Cup, after which he was assigned a similar role with France. Rugby lovers can book their Springboks Vs British And Irish Lions Tickets on discounted prices easily.

Shaun Edwards:

“The French Federation has shown a lot of confidence in me,” Edwards said.

They gave me a four and a half year contract. When I signed the contract, I knew the Lions would be off the radar. I know from personal experience that Lions have the highest-profile of all. Not only is he supported by three million people in Wales, but he is also fully supported by England, Ireland, and Scotland.

“Being in France makes it different. They probably don’t understand how prestigious it is to be selected for the Lions, but that’s beside the point. I’m not expecting a phone call.”

British and Irish Lions – Realistic Warren Gatland choices who aren’t even playing international rugby right now

British and Irish Lions tours have been synonymous with the bolt out of the blue selections of uncapped players or those with next to no Test match experience. Rugby lovers can book their South Africa A Vs British And Irish Lions Tickets on discounted prices easily.

And while next summer’s curtailed eight-match tour to South Africa offers slightly less scope for Warren Gatland. To detonate one of his selection grenades associated with his 12 years in Wales. Don’t bet against the grizzled Kiwi lobbing a left-field name into the squad.

Derek Quinnell was uncapped when the head of the great Welsh rugby clan was plucked by Carwyn James. Straight from a strong Llanelli side to be a member of the famous 1971 Lions tour of New Zealand. In 1989 ‘Prince of Centres’ Jeremy Guscott was called up to tour Australia whilst still uncapped for England.

Little was known of the Bath man when selected other than his elegant running style and eye for a gap. And eight years later Will Greenwood was picked out of relative anonymity by Ian McGeechan due to his fantastic support lines and ability to get over the whitewash at Leicester Tigers.

That tour John Bentley also put his name up in the pantheon of Lion’s bolters nine years after winning two caps for England before going on to represent the Great Britain rugby league team.He was labelled ‘one of the best and most inspired Lions selections’.

So who are the leading uncapped contenders and those with just a brief flirtation with Test rugby that could be making headline news in 2021 Gatland names his squad for the three-Test series with the 2019 Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks?

We give you the runners and riders…..

Louis Rees-Zammit (Wales, uncapped)

Rees-Zammit admitted himself he was ‘not a happy camper’ and ‘devastated’

It was a source of frustration among some Welsh rugby fans when the 19-year-old jet-heeled Gloucester wing prodigy was called up to the 2020 Six Nations squad and never got capped by Wayne Pivac. Rugby lovers can book their South Africa Invitational Vs British And Irish Lions Tickets on discounted prices easily.

Rees-Zammit admitted himself he was ‘not a happy camper’ and devastated. Not to play after shooting to prominence at Kingsholm with 12 tries in 15 games for the west country giants.

With pace to scorch the hard grounds of South Africa, Gatland has enjoyed success with Welsh wingers in his Lions squad. If he can maintain the stellar standards when English Premiership rugby resumes next weekend. Not all eyebrows would be raised if the Cardiff-born whiz-kid was called into the squad.

Alex Dombrandt (England, uncapped)

Dombrandt has had a meteoric rise after leaving Cardiff Met for Quins in 2018,

Last weekend former England back-row big-hitter Peter Winterbottom voiced his bemusement. Why the barnstorming Wales Under-20s cap continues to stay on the England sidelines under stubborn coach Eddie Jones.

Rembrandt has had a meteoric rise after leaving Cardiff Met for Quins in 2018, when his career took off in all aspects, except recognition at Test level. Rugby lovers can book their Springboks Vs British And Irish Lions Tickets on discounted prices easily.

At 6ft 4ins and 18th 5lbs, the 23-year-old has all the attributes to cut it at Test level. This leaves Winterbottom incredulous Jones continues to snub the “The Dominator”.

He told The Rugby Paper: “Dombrandt’s potential is massive. He is a skilful player, he has good hands, whether it’s passing, linking or offloading – he’s a quick big man who hits good lines in attack.”

Winterbottom added he was even more mystified. When Jones presses openside flanker Tom Curry into No.8 duties in the Six Nations when Billy Vunipola was injured.

“There is nothing I see that means Dombrandt would not be a very good international No.8 now,” he added.

“Curry did a good job at eight but is far more explosive carrying the ball. Going forward he is one of the best in the country. That’s why I thought the England coaches would have taken him to the 2019 World Cup. If it is about refining his game at the top level and making good decisions, being there would have been invaluable.”

Uncapped by England doesn’t always translate into uncapped by the Lions – ask Greenwood and Guscott?

Duhan van der Merwe (Scotland, uncapped)

The 6ft 4ins and 16st 10lbs South African Under-20s wing only qualified for Scotland in June after serving his three-year residency period north of the border with Richard Cockerill’s Edinburgh side.

The 6ft 4ins and 16st 10lbs South African Under-20s wing Duhan van der Merwe only qualified for Scotland in June

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend has since made it clear. An international call-up is a matter of when not if and don’t rule out a debut against Wales. This autumn in their delayed 2020 Six Nations Championship clash. A delight for stats anoraks in the Guinness PRO14.

Van der Merwe making 73 carries beating 61 defenders the most of any player in the tournament. He has made 27 clean breaks (tournament-leading), 756 run metres (tournament-leading) and has seven tries to his name (third in the competition).

He has time on his side to stake his claim for Lions selection. When the Six Nations resumes later this year. Another wing who could leave Gatland drooling given his pace, power and physical prowess.

He is then expected to return to see out the final two years of his four-year deal with the two-time Super Rugby champions. Maori All Blacks and Bay of Plenty coach Clayton MacMillan signing a one-year contract to fill the void left by Gatland next season.

Should the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to wreak havoc in South Africa, force the cancellation of the tour to the Republic. Gatland said he would relish the opportunity to return to the Chiefs.

The Lions tour was given the go-ahead three weeks ago. This allows some “certainty” for the multitude of fans expected to travel from the United Kingdom.

There are over half a million coronavirus cases in South Africa. There is plenty of uncertainty about the feasibility of the eight-match tour. Tour is scheduled to kick-off against the Stormers in Cape Town on July 3.

“It’s something we haven’t talked about. I’d have to do it for free, probably, I won’t get paid,” Gatland said when asked on Friday if he would like to stay involved in the Chiefs’ plans next season if the Lions tour is called off.

But absolutely. In these last seven or eight weeks, I’ve learnt a lot about the players. What sort of things you’d do differently, what things you would continue with. Working with the other coaches, hopefully, the things that we’ve learnt collectively will be beneficial for next year.

“So [if he’s with the Lions] it’s going to be a challenge. Would I like that continuity? I would. But we’re still day by day and we’re seeing what’s going to be happening in that space going forward.”

British & Irish Lions Tour – Jamie Ritchie staying dedicated amid British & Irish Lions assumption

Jamie Ritchie says he is flattered by suggestions that he will start for the British & Irish Lions on next year’s tour to South Africa. Rugby lovers can book their South Africa A Vs British And Irish Lions Tickets on discounted prices easily.

He insists that after months without a game he cannot afford to look any further forward than Edinburgh’s forthcoming double-header against Glasgow. In recent days both Lions legend, Sir Ian McGeechan, and former Scotland lock Jim Hamilton have nominated Ritchie for a place in the tourists’ matchday 15.

Rugby World Cup:

Both at last year’s Rugby World Cup and during this year’s Six Nations the Edinburgh back-row forward showed the standard of play required to have a good chance of selection. And yet, after such a long lay-off, and with a huge amount of rugby to be played over the coming months, Ritchie is taking nothing at all for granted.

“It’s extremely humbling to be included in those conversations, especially from guys like Ian,” the 23-year-old said.

A lot of people can get caught up looking too far ahead. It’s a bit of a cliche, but you’re only as good as your last game. I’m concentrating on trying to get back into form. If I get picked for these Glasgow games, they’ll be opportunities for me to find a vein of form. It looks like such an incredible experience across the board.

Not just the games themselves but the whole tour, having all the fans out there and stuff. It would be an awesome thing to be involved in. If the call comes, the call comes, but I certainly won’t be holding my breath.

Sir Ian McGeechan have nominated Jamie Ritchie for a place in the tourists’ matchday 15
Sir Ian McGeechan have nominated Jamie Ritchie for a place in the tourists’ matchday 15

“It would be a huge honour. It’s something I’ve dreamt about since I was a kid, don’t get me wrong, but I need to put myself in that position and there’s a lot of rugby between now and then. Hopefully, I’ll be in with a shout, but as I say there’s a lot of rugby to be played before then. I just need to keep playing well.”

The individual form he was in before lockdown made the abrupt cessation of rugby particularly frustrating for Ritchie, who was part of the Scotland squad that travelled to Wales only to have their game called off at the 11th hour. That game is now set to be played in October as part of an extremely busy international autumn schedule.

Ritchie seems confident that, even if a bit of rustiness will be inevitable in Edinburgh’s first matches back, he should be up to speed in time for the Test campaign.

“Especially when we were down in Wales, we were full of confidence,” he continued.

We were looking to go to the Principality and get a win. I think we were all fairly confident that was going to happen. So it was frustrating. We thought we were going to be the only sports fixture in the world at one point. But unfortunately, it fell by the wayside, as did everything else.

Jamie Ritchie says he is flattered by suggestions that he will start for the British & Irish Lions

Jamie Ritchie Form:

In terms of my form, I’m not too worried about it. What will be will be? I’m pretty sure that I’ll hopefully be able to get back into some kind of form off the back of having this time off. It’s just a case of making sure I prepare properly. With these two Glasgow games, I’m not expecting to be firing right from the off.

It sometimes takes a couple of games to get into it. There’s lots of rugby to be played, so I’m not too worried at the moment. This period is about trying to build up as much robustness as we can because when the season starts we’re probably going to be at it for a wee while without a break.

Cockers [Edinburgh coach Richard Cockerill] will certainly have us ready. They are extremely physical encounters. There’s always the Scotland thing on the line. It’s an opportunity to get back into rugby. We need to be firing on all cylinders.

“Now we’ve got a date in mind it’s easy to have a focus now. I’m not looking too far past that.”

Will Greenwood podcast:

Gatland told the Will Greenwood podcast: “I’ve spoken to Stuart and we’ve had a couple of conversations

You must show some respect for Stuart. He got done with England, at that point he’s disappeared and he’s done some expert development. There’s no uncertainty what he’s done and the effect that he’s had since his time with Leinster.

He’d state that he’s certainly improved as a mentor and I have a gigantic measure of regard for him.We met before the last visit and he addressed me about his sentiments on the Leinster players and the Irish players. He gave me knowledge into them and I valued that.

“He’s one person that I’ve spoken to and had a couple of conversations with him, but there are many other people that I’ll be looking to talk to.”

Gatland also gave assurances about Saracens players. Players who ply their trade in English rugby’s second tier next season will not be disadvantaged in Lions tour selection.

“It’s not as if those players aren’t experienced or haven’t achieved at the highest level,” he said.

Furthermore, a great deal of them who have been engaged with England or been on past Lions visits have been especially at the head of the game.

“So I don’t have any concerns and worries about what state they’re going to be in, because I think they’re going to get enough top-level rugby before the tour.”

The 40-year-old previous England chief went about as an associate mentor to Warren Gatland on the Lions’ attracted arrangement with New Zealand 2017. In any case, when inquired as to whether he had any plans on another Lions visit the following summer, Borthwick demanded he has given the thought no idea.

Borthwick stated It’s never been referenced, never been referenced and it’s never entered my thoughts, to be completely forthright.

“I’m not one to give proclamations without having put any idea behind them. So I’ve not contemplated that, I’ve not put any idea to that whatsoever.”

Borthwick in the meantime vowed Leicester will “adjust and survive” after losing England focus Manu Tuilagi to Sale Sharks. Lions star Tuilagi headed a cast rundown of six senior players to leave Leicester after dismissing 25 percent wage cuts, due to the coronavirus emergency and pay top decreases.

Tuilagi has since finished paperwork available to be purchased until the finish of the 2020-21 season, leaving the club he joined as a youngster for one of Leicester’s immediate adversaries. Huge name signings like Fiji wing Nemani Nadolo are now ready.

The Tigers hope to advance under new lead trainer Borthwick, with stars like Matias Moroni, Kobus Van Wyk, and Kini Murimurivalu likewise enrolled. What’s more, Borthwick demanded the Tigers can adapt to Tuilagi’s misfortune in pushing towards another time.

“Conditions do change, conditions, things you’ve made arrangements for, do change,” said Borthwick.

Nobody could have anticipated this most recent couple of months, you return, even return to when I was training England during the Six Nations, and nobody might foresee toward the beginning of the Six Nations that we wouldn’t have the option to complete the competition, with what’s occurred.

So I think with any circumstance you get yourself, you adjust, you figure out how to adjust; figure out how to adjust and survive.

“We’ve made a few signings, the players we have here are striving to develop themselves, to help improve this group and take this group forward. Furthermore, that is the thing that we’ll keep on doing.”

Borthwick’s Leicester switch was affirmed in April, before he began work at Welford Road on July 1. The previous Saracens lock has just pledged to direct Leicester back to the top, with the Tigers at present grieving in the eleventh spot in the suspended Premiership’s table.

When tested on how rapidly Leicester can indeed be trying for flatware, however, Borthwick demanded he won’t yet be setting whenever confines on that modifying work.

“At present, we’re concentrating on the present time and place and what we can do in this circumstance,” said Borthwick.

We’ve made a beginning on and we’re attempting to set up what we need to do. We realize we are very brave to the crew that has occurred, and we are very brave increments that will be joining the crew at the appropriate time. What’s more, as we go we’ll be building this group going ahead.

As far as looking forward and causing objectives for that as we to go, I’m not going to stay here and do that.

“What I will do is a discussion about how we’re going to prepare, how we will set ourselves up. Furthermore, if we keep on doing that we’ll gain ground as a group.”

Itoje not ready to captain British and Irish Lions Lions claims former Saracens coach

Itoje is being tipped by numerous individuals to get approval from Warren Gatland to lead the visiting side. Yet Venter accepts the profoundly appraised England lock isn’t prepared for the job. Regardless of being a star of the 2017 visit through New Zealand.

In a top to bottom meeting with Planet Rugby’s David Skipper, the previous Springbok addressed the Lions captaincy. He said that while he thinks he has ‘gigantic potential’, the 2020 Itoje vintage was at this point to develop. By and by, I don’t think Maro is prepared to be that pioneer yet.

“I think he has gigantic potential, he’s a decent man.”

Itoje has shown up since his introduction appearance for Saracens in 2014. He began in each of the three Lions Tests against the All Blacks three years prior. Yet Venter accepts the 25-year-old is most appropriate adding to the group in different manners.

He has great qualities yet I figure it will be hard for him, and Maro’s way is adding to a group from multiple points of view. In the event that you take a youngster and anticipate that him should be a pioneer of the British and Irish Lions, I don’t know whether that bodes well.

“Be that as it may, you never know. He has one more year to create and no one can tell what will occur during that period.”

Owen Farrell:

Venter appears to support England commander Owen Farrell as skipper.

“Owen has been so fruitful – for Saracens and England – and he did well in New Zealand also with the British and Irish Lions (in 2017). Additionally, in light of the fact that he is so experienced, I think somebody like Owen would be a decent decision at long last at the same time, if Warren Gatland chooses to go with a greater part of players from Wales, it could be another person as chief.”

Gatland has just indicated that Itoje is driving the race for the pined for job. “Itoje is the name that keeps springing up,” said in a Rugby World meeting in June.

Warren Gatland:

He’s a savvy player and an astute man and has been amazingly effective in his vocation,’ said Gatland. ‘He would be in conflict as one of the potential outcomes as skipper.

‘It’s tied in with picking the crew and afterward saying who do we think will be commander material. Preferably, it’s someone who has originated from a group that has been entirely fruitful. The following inquiry is in the event that we were picking the Test group currently.

Is there a decent possibility this individual would make that Test group?’ Itoje is the name that keeps springing up,’ said Gatland. ‘You take a gander at that and go, well, there are some truly acceptable second columns around and he’s not awful. You have Courtney Lawes and George Kruis.

How’s Alun Wyn Jones going around then? There’s James Ryan. There’s no uncertainty about Itoje’s quality.
