The earlier format saw the finalists play home and away games to determine the winners of Africa’s elite club competition. The first final of the competition did take place as a single game in Ghana back in 1965. Every subsequent final saw two legs take place, with the aggregate score determining the overall result.

The conclusion of the 2019 tournament proved controversial, with Wydad Casablanca walking off in protest at an issue with the video assistant referee (VAR) system during the second leg of their match with Esperance.

Esperance was leading the second leg 1-0 at the time, with the first match having ended in a 1-1 draw. Esperance was awarded the victory but was told by CAF that they must return their trophy and medals after its Executive Committee decided to overturn that outcome.

This decision was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ruled Wydad Casablanca had lost the second leg by abandoning the match. The final will now be played at a neutral venue, with Douala’s newly constructed Japoma Stadium due to host tie on May 29.
