NATIONAL diver Leong Mun Yee admits she has a lot of catching up to do after two months of being out of the pool. Since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in March, all national athletes have been barred from training due to the Movement Control Order (MCO).

But Malaysia has entered an exit phase and athletes under the Road to Tokyo Olympics programmed have been given the green light to resume training. With the divers set to re-enter the National Aquatic Centre from June 8, four-time Olympian Mun Yee is looking forward to regular training again.

The Perakian, who bagged silver with Pandelela Rinong at the Montreal World Diving Series in February, has only a mini pool at home to help her cope with the need to be in the water. But the 35-year-old believes she needs to regain a lot of muscle mass before she can get back to actual diving.

“There is certainly a lot of catching up for me to do, said Mun Yee who has been back in her hometown in Ipoh since March. As I am not a swimmer, the mini pool didn’t help much as it is just a cardio exercise.”

Without being able to go to the gym for the past two months and no weight training, I’ve lost a lot of muscle mass. I need to gain that back before I start diving again. I’m rusty now. I’ve been waiting for this green light for quite a while. It has been too long without training in the pool. But I am agreeable with the timing to resume training.

It is worth the wait because safety is more important. Even though a lot of scheduling has been affected, I plan to focus solely on the Olympics, added Mun Yee who is set for a record fifth Olympic appearance since making her debut at the 2000 Sydney Games.
