Champions League final set to be held behind closed doors as Uefa meet, with voiding season ‘off the table’

Uefa and the collective European leagues are committed to completing the 2019/20 domestic and continental seasons before 2020/21 begins, and are now actively planning for the major showpiece finals to be played behind closed doors, with voiding the campaign “off the table”.

The governing body is set to stage another video conference on Wednesday about player contracts and the transfer window amid the coronavirus crisis, but The Independent has been told by multiple sources that detailed discussions have already taken place about the fate of this season. All parties are fully aligned with the English view that the campaign must be completed, whenever that is.

Uefa has set up two working groups to find solutions to the crisis – one on league logistics, the other on financial matters – and the reasons for the stance on completing 2019/20 are the same as in England: financial; sporting integrity; the mass complications that come with ending seasons prematurely and also the knock-on effect on the many jobs connecting to the game. Like with the Premier League, a significant amount of financial pressure comes from broadcast contracts and the potential loss of tens of millions, but the lack of match-day income is already putting clubs under huge economic stress.

For all the focus on the top leagues, there is a realization among Uefa and various stakeholders like the European League Association that many clubs are in urgent danger. Tuesday saw former Slovak champions MSK Zilina go into liquidation after releasing 17 players, while sources in Germany say several big clubs in Bundesliga II – the country’s second-tier – are only weeks from going bust, and many are now attempting drastic action.

Survival concerns are thereby the greatest motivation, but there is also a deeper awareness that the longer-term future of the game itself is dependent on protecting its integrity – something that would be entirely compromised if the 2020/21 season starts based on arbitrary decisions and positions.

Several sources even maintain that the logistical concerns are such that it would be easier to try and complete the season – whenever that may be – than adopt regulations and work out solutions to end campaigns prematurely or void them. There is a realization it opens legal and technical minefields.

The working groups have thereby been encouraged to find creative ways to finish the seasons, but there is a general acceptance fixture that will have to be played behind closed doors for football to continue. They are also fully aware of the need for flexibility since any solutions are dependent on the spread of the coronavirus crisis.

“The smaller and poorer the league, the more problems they have,” one source said.

As such, plans will be re-assessed every month. There’s similarly the issue that universal solutions are impossible, since the circumstances differ from country to country, and the advice from every individual government is different. As goes without saying, what works in Germany may not work in especially badly hit countries like Italy or Spain. Serie A, however, still plans to finish the season despite the extent of the crisis in Italy.

Despite that and the threat the crisis could continue to impact football for the next 18 months, there are currently no plans to truncate the structure of competitions for 2020/21. All parties are maintaining an optimistic outlook and hoping they can go as normal even if next season starts later, but that will again be re-assessed every month. The view among the working bodies is to “create conditions according to what we know”.

Champions League: Messi is on top but Iniesta was something else – Arda Turan said

Turkey worldwide accepts the former Barcelona midfielder was unique about all the rest – even the six-time Ballon d’Or victor. Arda Turan admits that Lionel Messi is the best player he has ever played with, however previous Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta is something different altogether.

Turan’s time with Barcelona, however, has not exactly arrived at the statures of his time at Atletico. In the wake of showing up and prevailing upon four trophies in his initial two seasons, Turan has spent the keep going three battles on credit with Istanbul Basaksehir.

That credit was ended in January, with the midfielder having been trapped in various discussions during his time back in his local Turkey.  Turan was suspended for 16 matches, later diminished to 10, for pushing an associate arbitrator in 2018 while the midfielder additionally stood out as truly newsworthy after a fight with pop star Berkay Sahin that equivalent year.

Turan moved to Barcelona in 2015 after winning four trophies, including La Liga and the Europa League, as a player at Atletico Madrid.  Once at Camp Nou, previous opponents Messi and Iniesta became colleagues, with Turan saying that the team is the most gifted he has ever been near.  There’s no compelling reason to discuss Messi. He’s the best player I have played with. Be that as it may, Iniesta was something different. His mentality, his charge of the ball causes you to appreciate him.

“I have committed errors. In any case, dislike I’m done,” he said.

In any case, he is seeking another chance at Barcelona as he receives him despite everything that has something to offer. At the point when I begin playing football three months from now, I can be improved than every other person after three or four sports. I can even now resemble the old Arda Turan.

I need to play football for a club where I can feel upbeat. I can, in any case, play football at an elevated level for four or five years. I have an agreement with Barcelona. I needed it to be the situation until the finish of the period. This is the thing that I needed.  Even though he is as yet an individual from Barca’s crew, Turan conceded that he does, in any case, think back affectionately on his time with Atleti, which he accepts was his most splendid period as a footballer.

Can Pep Guardiola Win the Champions League Final Again?

A two-time winner of the Champions League, it’s been nine years since Pep Guardiola last lifted the trophy. Is time running out for the Spaniard? David Villa has just scored Barcelona’s third goal of the 2011 Champions League Final. Pep Guardiola was dancing on the touchline while a dejected Manchester United manager, Alex Ferguson, wondered how on earth anyone could beat a Guardiola team in Europe. The full-time whistle blew and the popular Spaniard had done it again: champions of Europe for a second time. This was just the start of Guardiola’s love affair with Europe’s premier competition.

Or so we believed. It was anything but. Nine years on, Guardiola’s wait for a third title continues. His achievements at Barcelona have not been replicated, not even he was coaching the world’s best players at Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Speculation is rife as to why this is the case. The Lionel Messi factor is one major talking point; Guardiola agrees with critics that he only won the competition because of the players he was working with.

While Guardiola’s tiki-taka style suited Barcelona, his philosophy at Bayern and Manchester City has worked wonders in domestic competitions but not in Europe.  Despite the barren spell, his captain at Barcelona, Carles Puyol, has leaped to his defense and said that his former coach will win the title again soon. On the other hand, Ruud Gullit revealed on beIN SPORTS in April 2018, that without Messi, Guardiola will probably not win the title again.

When Guardiola joined Bayern in 2013, they were European champions and winners of an unprecedented quadruple in German football. A great chance for Guardiola to continue Jupp Heynckes legacy was thwarted by Real Madrid in the semi-finals. When Guardiola signed for Manchester City, he joined a team with very little European experience but plenty of big-name players.

City tends to close every year, but with each passing season, the pressure mounts; some would say deservedly so, particularly with the amount of money spent in the transfer market. But now, with a potential European ban looming over City, one could be forgiven for thinking that Guardiola’s opportunity to win European silverware for the Citizens has passed and that his role at the Etihad Stadium is drawing to a close.

Guardiola says he will be regarded as a failure at Manchester City if he fails to win the Champions League. Where will he go next? He is yet to coach in Italy or France. Perhaps he could one day return to Spain. However, what is clear, as Guardiola and many others have commented, is that he may need a magician similar to Messi, to help him achieve another Champions League triumph.

What Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was told at Champions League final after party

Jordan Henderson saw his dreams come true as he lifted the Champions League trophy in Madrid and one former team-mate was on hand to offer some thoughtful praise. Jose Enrique has revealed what he told Jordan Henderson after Liverpool’s Champions League final triumph last June.

The Reds captain raised aloft the club’s sixth title in Madrid after overcoming Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano. Enrique, who played alongside Henderson for at Anfield for five years, was there to watch on as Jurgen Klopp’s side ran out 2-0 winners in his native Spain.

The ex-Liverpool defender has now lifted the lid on what he told his former team-mate at the after-party in the Spanish capital. Speaking with The Anfield Wrap, Enrique told of his early hours chat with the midfielder and how Henderson has proved himself at the club. He arrived at a young age. It was a massive transfer fee.

“I was so happy for the followers and the club with the Champions League,” the 34-year-old said. I too, because Liverpool is in my heart. But I was the happiest for him.

When I saw him at the after-party, I told him: the one person I am most happy for is you, because I know you have the pressure all the time that everyone is putting on you that you’re the next Gerrard of the team. Everyone is comparing you to him. Now nobody can say anything. You lifted that trophy. You won the Champions League; you are an unbelievable captain.

Henderson made his return to the midfield against Atletico Madrid as the holders were knocked out of the competition at the start of the month. The England international had sustained an injury in the first leg loss which ruled him out of three Premier League fixtures.

But Enrique thinks the midfield stalwart deserves to be named player of the season following an impressive campaign in which the Reds have flourished to a 25-point lead in the league under his captaincy.

The last three seasons Jordan has been unbelievable for Liverpool. But for me, I would give a player of the season to Jordan Henderson. He deserves it. He has been incredible not just on the pitch but off the pitch. When he wasn’t on the pitch, you can see you miss him.

Here is a glance at six of the most noticeably terrible players to get a victors’ award over the most recent ten years. A stun determination by Roberto Di Matteo, Ryan Bertrand had never played in the Champions League making his presentation on the greatest phase of all.

In reality, he’d scarcely played for Chelsea by any stretch of the imagination, having spent a great part of the past six years out on credit at a progression of lower group clubs. Bertrand began at left-midfield in the last, entrusted with encouraging Ashley Cole to keep Philipp Lahm and Arjen Robben calm down Bayern Munich’s correct flank.

He was supplanted by Florent Malouda profound into the subsequent half, with the game still goalless. He just showed up in the Champions League before being offered to Southampton in February 2015. 2012 last was Jose Bosingwa’s second taste of Champions League greatness, having likewise won the opposition with Porto in 2004.

That time he was left on the seat with Paulo Ferreira beginning in front of him, however, their jobs were switched eight years on. The Portuguese right-back was protectively suspect yet had the pace to consume and assisted with keeping Bayern under control until the 83rd moment when Thomas Muller scored. Luckily, Didier Drogba evened out with a pounding header and scored the triumphant punishment in the consequent shoot-out.

Bosingwa left Stamford Bridge that late spring and was consigned with Queens Park Rangers toward the finish of the accompanying season. The Frenchman was simply a functional back-up protector for a first-class club, somebody to plug the holes when others were inaccessible. Fit for assigning in the center or on the left of safeguard, Jeremy Mathieu joined Barcelona from Valencia in the mid-year of 2014.

Preceding showing up at the Nou Camp, he had won only a solitary trophy in his vocation, guaranteeing the French League Cup with Sochaux in 2004. Before long Mathieu couldn’t move for flatware, beginning with a La Liga and Champions League twofold in his first season.

It was a sight the Spaniard would become accustomed to, satisfying a similar job for two additional finals, with real success in the two.

Casilla, at last, left the Bernabeu last January, joining Leeds United to help their advancement push. What Manchester United think about Champions League being needed for Jadon Sancho transfer

Manchester United missed Jadon Sancho’s signing in last summer’s transfer window due to their failure to secure Champions League football. Borussia Dortmund star is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s target list for the summer transfer window alongside Jack Grealish and Jude Bellingham.

Manchester United have placed Sancho at the top of their summer wish list, with Borussia Dortmund star enjoying a positive season in Germany. The 20-year-old has scored 14 goals in the Bundesliga alone while recording 15 assists so far in his 23 league games. Liverpool eyeing Sancho, while Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is also a big fan of the English international.

But the Irish Independent says United think the Dortmund star will move to Old Trafford – whether or not they qualify for the Champions League next season. The rest of the season is uncertain due to the coronavirus crisis, the participation of the Red Devils in the competition for the next term is pending. Manchester City has been banned from the Champions League by UEFA, which means that the team that finishes fifth can take their place. As it stands, it’s United.

But City is appealing the UEFA decision and it could mean the Red Devils have to settle for a place in the Europa League. United are still hoping to secure the Champions League with a top-four, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad pressing Chelsea hard. But it seems that they deem it unnecessary to take Sancho this summer. The Dortmund star is expected to seal a summer move to United and become their next number 7 at Old Trafford. Alexis Sanchez is currently in this jersey but the Chilean international should be sold, after having struggled at Inter Milan. And Sancho, according to the report, could earn up to £ 400,000 a week at the club.

Pep Guardiola ‘could quit’ Man City because of two-year Champions League ban, says Emmanuel Petit

Guardiola joined City in 2016 and has won two Premier League titles, but has so far not won the Champions League. The Manchester club has been sentenced to two years’ ban on European competitions by UEFA due to breaches of financial fair play rules.

They appealed but if confirmed, the former midfielder of Arsenal Petit thinks that this could be the opportunity for Guardiola to leave the ship and take a sabbatical. He already did when he left Barcelona in 2012, taking a year before joining Bayern Munich.

“I think it might be a selection for him to permission City in the summer due to the Champions League ban,” Petit said the Mirror.

It could be a chance for him to step back and rest. Not long ago, he seemed tired of being a manager. Guardiola insisted he is happy at the club and will stay until at least the end of his contract, which runs until 2021. Petit thinks that Man City will have more worries to solve than the departure of his manager.

You never know what could happen, but for me, the major worry is not what could happen if Guardiola leaves the club – there will be another manager who will come if he leaves – for me, the future de City is not tied to Guardiola forever, Petit continued.

For me, the main concern is what would happen to Manchester City if the ban was still on the table after the call. Everything the City has been doing for five, six or seven years in terms of share. Everything they have built could soon be over. That could change everything at the club. The top players want to play in the finest competitions.

Champions League-winning teams ranked from ‘simply legendary’ to ‘better forgotten’

Return videos have been around recently with so many isolated or stranded people, so it’s inevitable that legendary European teams will be featured. Some people would say that Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona is the major we have ever seen, while others would point to the typical AC Milan and Real Madrid teams over the years.

Whichever squad you liked the most, you can’t deny the preference of opening a debate on the best teams in the Champions League in history. And here at GIVEMESPORT, we like Tier Maker’s way of dealing with these kinds of quarrels, and we’ve decided to filter out each Champions League winner in our level system.

So yes, it’s every team that has won since 1992 – except for Real Madrid’s hat-trick winners, which we have put together into one – and you can see how we ranked them below: You are making your luck in sports. So this category is for teams that have drawn on their underdog minds, which is a very big compliment depending on how you look at it.

Liverpool wasn’t quite vintage when it triumphed in 2005 – it was a team that finished fifth in the Premier League, after all – and their semi-final victory over Chelsea remains controversial. And although we can never deny their incredible character in the final, Milan should have seen the game either by parking the bus or by pulling harder on Andriy Shevchenko.

Chelsea was one of the most surprising winners of all time in 2012 and the fact that they were shot 35-9 for shots in the final highlights how they flew by the bench of their pants that year. The Blues were terrible during the group stages, needed a remarkable comeback against Napoli, and were lucky that Barcelona did not finish them and earnt drawbacks when the chips fell. As for Porto, just look at their last-minute equalizer at Old Trafford, the fact that they were second best against Deportivo in the semi-finals and draw Monaco in the climax to see how fortune has favored them.

Dortmund is debatably the strongest team in this group with heroes like Lars Ricken, Paulo Sousa, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Matthias Sammer who find themselves in a mustache of “ brilliant ” status. Meanwhile, Milan was rather lackluster in 2003, scoring only four goals in five knockout matches, as well as five of six in the group stage, was partly responsible for the very first scoreless final.

Depending on what you like, Inter was either a level of deity in 2010 or a football travesty with their cunning tactics under Jose Mourinho, so we think putting them in the middle is the right thing to do. And Real’s very first victory in the Champions League was certainly their weakest, although defeating a Juventus team led by Zinedine Zidane in the final should not be sniffed.

Champions League: Winning teams ranked from ‘simply legendary’ to ‘better forgotten’

The Champions League anthem will not resonate in stadiums and lounges for the foreseeable future. The coronavirus pandemic has seen the first European competition take a back seat and only time will tell how the last knockout games of the 2019/20 season will be played. But let’s ignore the speculation about one-legged matches or extravagance of tournaments in Istanbul for a second and think about why we love the Champions League in the first place.

Return videos have been around recently with so many isolated or stranded people, so it’s inevitable that legendary European teams will be featured. Some people would say that Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona is the biggest we have ever seen, while others would point to the quintessential AC Milan and Real Madrid teams over the years.

Greatest ever Champions League winners

But whichever team you liked the most, you can’t deny the pleasure of opening a debate on the best teams in the Champions League in history. And here at GIVEMESPORT, we love the support of Tier Maker to settle this kind of quarrel and we decided to filter each winner of the Champions League in our level system.

So yes, it’s every team that has won since 1992 – with the exception of Real Madrid’s hat-trick winners, which we have put together into one – and you can see how we ranked them below.

Marseille (1992/93)

With players like Didier Deschamps, Abedi Pele and Rudi Voller shining in this remarkable team, which violated one of the greatest defenses of football in the final, this Marseille team is legendary.

So why does it end at the bottom of our ranking? Well, because one wonders if the French side, the only club in his country to have won the competition, should have been stripped of the title.

Manchester United (1998/99)

Look, overeating doesn’t mean bad by any stretch of the imagination, every team on this list has won the Champions League and that makes them fantastic on that basis alone. Either way, the warnings aside. The Milan team in 1994 was wildly overestimated for the fact that it wiped out Barcelona 4-0 in the final, which while powerfully impressive was grossly unrepresentative of their napping football.

As for United, they deserve to be announced in the history books for winning the three major trophies, but things get much less impressive when you take their Champions League victory in isolation.

FC Porto (2003/04)

It goes without saying that you are making your own luck in sports. So this category is for teams that have tapped into their underdog minds, which is a big compliment depending on how you look at it.

Barcelona (2010/11)

Sorry real fans, but the two Guardiola teams that won the Champions League in Barcelona were worthy of a level alone and we just couldn’t separate this majestic pair of teams. Admittedly, the 2009 Barça team brought their luck in the semifinal with Chelsea, but their 4-0 erasure from Bayern and their 2-0 victory over United in the final have been posted for history books.

Messi led an unstoppable offensive trident with Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry, while the triumvirate of midfielder Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Sergio Busquets is arguably the largest ever assembled. Two years later and many of these players were still present, although we would argue that the new partners of Messi de Pedro and David Villa made the attack even more consistent than in 2009. It would, therefore, be fair to say that the League of champions has seen more remarkable winning teams over the years and it is incredibly difficult to separate them when they are all so brilliant.

And whether or not you agree that Chelsea 2012 is above 1999 United or any other decision, let us reassure you by saying that the 24 teams have achieved something that many legends have not managed to do. We simply divided one of the most esteemed levels in all of the football into much smaller levels. Think of it as selecting the best from the best.

Five players Man City could still target without Champions League football

Manchester City’s two-season suspension from the Champions League could have a real impact on their transfer plans this summer pending an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Pep Guardiola’s squad requires an overhaul, but with no Champions League football to trap top goals this could prove tougher than was originally envisaged.

Champions League enthusiasts from all over the world are invited to book Champions League tickets from our online ticketing platform. Manchester City followers can book Manchester City Tickets from our website on exclusively discounted prices.

Of course, City still has plenty to offer prospective signings, but they may have to be smarter in the transfer market.  Man, City has been linked with Nathan Ake in the past and it’s easy to see why. The Dutch center-back is good with the ball at his feet and boasts strong game intelligence. In many ways, he is the perfect Guardiola center-back and would stand a good chance of thriving under the Catalan coach at the Etihad Stadium.

Champions League Final Tickets| Atletico Madrid Tickets | Barcelona Tickets | Chelsea Tickets | Liverpool Tickets | Manchester City Tickets

With Bournemouth currently facing a fight against the drop, Ake would surely accept merely staying in the Premier League. A lack of Champions League football wouldn’t put the 25-year-old off a move to City, although they could face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.

As part of the Real Sociedad side that has engrossed and amused La Liga this season, Mikel Oyarzabal has only extra to a standing that already had him as one of the most exhilarating young players in Europe at this moment. Indeed, the 22-year-old has huge potential.

The picture could be changed if Real Sociedad qualifies for next season’s Champions League by concluding in La Liga’s top four, but Oyarzabal would confidently jump at the chance to work with Guardiola, a coach who could bring the best out of his game. There could be a squad spot to be filled if Leroy Sane leaves for Bayern Munich.

Champions League Final Tickets| Atletico Madrid Tickets | Barcelona Tickets | Chelsea Tickets | Liverpool Tickets | Manchester City Tickets

It seems likely that there will be a transfer market race for the signing of Jack Grealish this summer. The 24-year-old has marked himself out as one of the most promising young players with a series of sparkling performances for Aston Villa in the Premier League this season. He has carried his team at times. Manchester United have been strongly linked with Grealish, but there could be a clearer role for him to fill at Man City instead of with David Silva set to leave the club at the end of the season.

There would be an undeniable attraction to being anointed the successor to such a Premier League legend. His performance was key in ending Liverpool’s unbeaten Premier League run, scoring twice in a 3-0 win for Watford, and Ismaila Sarr is only getting better with every game he plays. Contracted from Rennes for a club-record fee of £30 million in the summer, Sarr, an immediate winger with an eye for goal, has been linked to Sadio Mane.

The city would have to break the bank to prise Sarr from Watford’s grips, with the Vicarage Road side almost definitely hoping to make a healthy profit on their £30 million investment, but the Senegalese international could be a good fit, especially with Sane and Silva expected to leave the club at the end of the season.

One of Man City’s biggest priorities this summer must be finding a long-term successor for Fernandinho. The Brazilian has been an excellent servant, but cannot continue forever and at 34-year-old it’s time for a replacement to be signed. Denis Zakaria is one candidate who would fit the bill.

The Swiss midfielder has been a key figure for Borussia Monchengladbach this season, acting as a protective barrier in front of the back four. Gladbach is still in the hunt for Champions League qualification themselves, but should they miss out Zakaria would surely be a realistic target for City.
